The city of Rome is dotted by fascinating fountains, over 2,000 of them ranging from ones that are massive and beautiful, to small tucked away hidden ones. The Trevi Fountain is by far the most famous, and underwent an extensive renovation for 20 months in 2014 and 2015. Luckily it opened to the public in late 2015, and now visitors to Rome can see it in all of its glory. The legend behind this fountain states that when a visitor throws a coin into it, they are guaranteed a return to Rome, hence why the fountain is always full of coins. This travertine fountain is actually used for charity, and each night the coins are collected and donated to an Italian charity, which helps Rome’s neediest. Visitors should know that the central figure in the fountain is Oceanus, god of the water, and accompanying him in the fountain are sea horses and tritons. If you happen to be newlyweds, it is tradition to drink out of the smaller fountain by the stairs and then smash a glass, although we wouldn’t suggest smashing the glass anywhere near the fountain.
