The Janiculum Hill is often referred to as the eighth hill of Rome, in reference to the seven hills in which Ancient Rome was built around. As the second highest hill in Ancient Rome, priests would often come here and stand atop it, searching for signs from the gods. The view from atop is priceless, and many visitors make their way here to enjoy the views, escape from the hustle and bustle of the city streets, and explore the monuments. The Garibaldi Monument is hard to miss up here as it’s a giant statute honouring Giuseppe Garibaldi. The statue honours Garibaldi for his heroic role on the hill in 1849, when the French troops attacked. His wife Anita is also honored with a statue and fought with him during those battles. Other statues include the Independence War Memorial, and Manfredi Lighthouse, along with a botanical garden on the eastern slope of the hill. If you come up here at night, the mood is romantic with many dubbing it as “lover’s lane.” Not easily accessible by public transportation, it is easier to reach if you have your own car.
