This onion market takes place each year during the second weekend of October and has survived since 1653, when farmers travelled 30 miles from Heldrungen to Weimar's market square with their harvest. The market has since evolved into the biggest food festival in Thuringia with carnival rides, a Ferris wheel, plenty of music, and 500 stalls serving onion soups, stews, bread, tarts, cake and much more. Vendors also put together ornate braids of onions. Bulbs sorted by colour and size are twisted around a straw core and enhanced with vibrant dried flowers and herbs. In 1995, the longest braid was recorded at 17 feet long and was hung from the tower of the city hall. And, with an average of 300,000 people attending, you won't be the only one smelling like an onion.
