Sualkuchi Weavers Village is also one place where the traditional art of weaving mekhela chadors and gamusa, the traditional Assamese garments made with indigenous materials, is still kept alive. It will not be completely incorrect to say that traditional weaving, in general, is a dying art.
Weaving is a big part of the culture, tradition and heritage in almost all parts of north eastern India. Usually, a weaver will produce these items of clothing for personal use or to supply to the local markets on a small scale.
These weaving workshops in Sualkuchi are both family-run and commercial enterprises. One interesting thing you will find here is that most of the looms used here are fitted with a Jacquard mechanism. On a wooden and bamboo frame, a warp (set of yarns) is fitted and an additional treadle (mechanism with a pedal) controlled by the weaver’s foot works the jacquard and produces the desired designs. Sounds complicated? It probably is. One can imagine the time it has taken for each weaver to learn this traditional art of weaving.
