Here's a brief history of Hauz Khas Village that many might not be aware of:
Origins
Hauz Khas Village traces its origins to the 13th century during the reign of Alauddin Khilji, the second ruler of Delhi. In 1296, Alauddin Khilji commissioned the construction of a massive water tank, now known as Hauz Khas Lake or Hauz-i-Alai, to supply water to the nearby Siri Fort and the newly built Siri city. The tank was originally called "Hauz-i-Alai" after the Sultan's name.Learning centre
Hauz Khas fell into disrepair after the decline of the Tughlaq dynasty. The water tank silted up, and the buildings were abandoned. Over time, the area was neglected and became a village.
Redevelopment
In the 1960s and 1970s, Hauz Khas Village underwent a revival when it was developed as a residential and commercial area. The picturesque lake and the historical ruins added to its charm, and it gradually became a hub for artists, designers, and intellectuals. The area saw the establishment of boutiques, galleries, restaurants, and cafes, making it a popular destination for both locals and tourists.
Modern significance
While Hauz Khas Village has evolved over the centuries, it continues to be a place that celebrates its historical heritage while embracing modern influences, making it a unique and culturally rich part of Delhi.
