About Rabari tribe
Once you step inside the village, you’ll be greeted with the classic desert sights of Rajasthan. The villagers here are absolutely warm and welcoming. You’ll be welcomed by smiling dhoti-clad men, wearing what-may-look-super-heavy red turbans and silver anklets. These people belong to a nomadic shepherding community called Rabari, who originally came from Balochistan thousands of years ago and settled here.
Rebaris are ardent devotees of Lord Shiva (who wears leopard’s skin) and His consort Parvati. The tribe strongly believes that they were created by Shiva and Parvati. The story they tell of their existence takes us to the mythological home of god and goddess in Mount Kailash. Shiva created the tribe to tame and take care of Parvati’s camels on earth.
The history of leopards, the world’s one of the most feared predators, dates back to more than a thousand years in this village. Today, Bera is one of those places with the highest number of big cats. But not a single human has been hurt by them till date apart from a few livestock.
Villagers and leopards have such a good rapport here that safari tour operators sell the package with interesting slogans, which claim that if you do not see a leopard, you’ll get all your money back! Imagine the level of confidence.
At times, tourists visiting the village get scared after seeing leopards freely roaming around the temples inside the village. But this certainly doesn’t scare the villagers who worship and consider leopards their guardian angels.
