The Indira Gandhi International Airport, Delhi, is all set to tackle fog conditions this winter season. This is being done with the help of a GPS-enabled vehicle navigational system that will guide aircrafts in a better way.The Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), Air Traffic Control (ATC), and Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) made the announcement at a joint workshop. The GPS-based navigation system has been places in four terminals of Delhi Airport – T2, T3, T1D, and T1C. Prabhakara Rao, CEO, DIAL, said that the airport has eight navigational vehicles, all of which are now GPS-enabled, and will guide pilots who are landing in adverse weather conditions. This can also help during dense fogs.

The foggy conditions in Delhi that starts from December, and goes on until February is a problem for both railways and airlines, and the new GPS system will perhaps help flights to take off and land safely. Flight delays during fog conditions occur every year at the Delhi Airport. RK Jenamani, Director-In-Charge, said that this year, foggy condition is expected to start after December 17.

Additionally, passengers at the airport will also be informed about weather-related information on the Master Antenna Televisions at the airport terminals, besides getting regular updates and flight information about expected departure and arrival times. You will also have Help Desks at the entrances of each terminal for information on flight schedule and cancellations.
