India to become the third largest tourism economy in the world, reveals report

A 2018 impact report by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has revealed that India will become the third largest travel and tourism economy by 2028. According to the report, the growth will take place in terms of direct and total GDP.
The report has further revealed that India will be able to offer as many as 10 million jobs in the tourism sector by the year 2028. Translating this in more detailed numbers, the total number of jobs, including both direct and indirect to the tourism sector, will increase from 42.9 million in 2018 to 52.3 million in 2028.

While India is being credited to have the seventh largest travel and tourism economy in the world, Gloria Guevara, President and CEO of WTTC, also stressed on the fact that India should focus on improving its world-class tourism infrastructure.
Giving more details on this, Guevara said, “The biggest single area of improvement for travel and tourism in India is infrastructure. Tourism is a competitive business in a global context and India’s near neighbours to the east and west have built world-class tourism infrastructure in the form of airports, seaports, high-speed rail and roads. WTTC has long welcomed the opportunity of the Regional Connectivity Scheme to open up 350 unserved and underserved airports and airstrips.”
