One of the most popular weekend getaways for Bangkok locals—owing to the short travel time and good mix of activities—Hua Hin is a good option for respite from the rigours of city life. Don’t expect a tropical paradise (Koh Samet is a better fit for that), Hua Hin offers a more immersive experience with its beaches, history, water sports, golf courses, shopping, lots of good restaurants, and nightlife. It is also home to the Royal family’s beachside palace—which is why it’s been a favourite with royalty and snob society since the 1920s. The options for accommodation range from inexpensive guest houses to five stars, the street-side stalls are a delight for bargain-hunters, and while the beach isn’t exactly of the powder-white variety, its wide expanse and dramatic tide has a charm of its own.
