One of Chicago’s strangest neighbourhoods and also one of its more interesting, Pullman is located deep in the South Side. Pullman was recently declared a national park, but there isn’t any nature out here. Pullman is pure industrial history, and was actually founded to be a utopian workers community. It’s where the first black union was founded, and after the industry left the city it was left pretty empty. In recent years, people have begun heading back to the neighbourhood, creating public art projects and bringing new businesses back to the city. Take one of the walking tours of Pullman to learn about its history, which is central to American industry and Chicago workers movements and black heritage. Check out Cooperation Operation and hear about their efforts to end the problem of food desert in the city.
