Here’s what we miss when we skip exploring Agra Fort
Agra Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the lesser sister of Taj Mahal, the star attraction in Agra. Located just 2.5 km from Taj Mahal, Agra Fort enjoys the quiet solitude which, at Taj Mahal, is a far cry. This imposing red sandstone fortress is compared to Delhi’s historic Red Fort. But what we forget is that Agra Fort has its own history and it should be known to all.
It is a historical fort with a rich and diverse story, one that talks about the brilliance of the Mughal era. Here are some of the most interesting things about Agra Fort that will inspire you to give this monument the attention that it deserves.
History of Agra Fort
Agra Fort, dating back to the 16th century, was originally built by Akbar the Great, the third Mughal emperor. This fort, for centuries, served as the main residence of the Mughal emperors. It has also witnessed a number of dynastic changes, some peaceful, some tumultuous.
An architectural marvel
The fort is one of the most stunning examples of Mughal architecture in India. The fort is characterised by its red sandstone construction and intricate design elements.
Fort’s palaces and halls
Within the fort, there are structures such as the Diwan-i-Aam (Hall of Public Audience), Diwan-i-Khas (Hall of Private Audience), and Jahangir's Palace. These structures/buildings, that are a mix of Persian, Islamic, and Indian architectural styles, are pretty impressive.
Shah Jahan's story
Did you know that Agra Fort was the place where Emperor Shah Jahan was imprisoned by his son Aurangzeb? It is believed that Shah Jahan, while in captivity, used to gaze across the Yamuna River at the Taj Mahal, the mausoleum that he built for his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal. Now that’s the love story worth discussing.
Fort’s strategic location
Agra fort, positioned along the banks of the Yamuna River, was strategically placed for military purposes. The fort acted as a military stronghold and offered protection to the Mughal rulers from external threats.
A UNESCO World Heritage Site
Agra Fort's rich cultural and historical background is why today we find this monument in the UNESCO World Heritage list.
Awe-inspiring views of the Taj Mahal
One of the most remarkable features of Agra Fort is the stunning view of the Taj Mahal. When we view the Taj Mahal from Agra Fort, one is looking at something that Shah Jahan looked at every day while he was in prison.
