Many centuries later, these Chinese fishing nets have become a prominent tourist attraction. They are a part of the city’s cultural heritage. The Chinese fishing nets have not only been vital for the livelihood of local fishermen but have also become a symbol of Kochi's cultural identity. They have become iconic structures that attract tourists from around the world.
However, this recognition didn’t prevent their decline. Once they were many in number along the harbour, but now only a few remain. What’s left of these iconic Chinese Fishing Nets is also surrounded by garbage.
Against all odds, efforts have been made to preserve and protect these heritage structures. These iconic structures are still widely recognised and they have a special place in Kochi’s local culture and tourism industry.
