One of the most visited tourist attractions in Jaipur is Hawa Mahal or the Palace of Winds. Built in red and pink sandstone, the palace is located in the heart of the Jaipur city. The main highlight of this palace is its 900 windows or the ‘jharokhas’ which are intricately designed. The royal women during the Rajput rule were not allowed to go in public and were strictly made to follow the purdah system. This is the reason why this palace was designed, to make the royal women have a view of day to day lives of the common people on the bustling streets through these windows.
