Well, these are some of the basic questions that come to mind. So let’s begin and find out all the answers related to the famous Kullu Dussehra.
Origin of Kullu Dussehra
Kullu Dussehra dates back to the 17th century and is associated with Raja Jagat Singh. He was the ruler of the kingdom and also the person who started the Kullu Dussehra tradition. As per the locals, Raja Jagat Singh brought the statue of Lord Raghunath (Lord Rama) to Kullu from Ayodhya against the wishes of Rani Damayanti. To seek forgiveness, the king decided to conduct a grand Dussehra festival, dedicated to Lord Raghunath.
It is said that he started the tradition of celebrating Dussehra in Kullu as a mark of penance. This event became the foundation of the elaborate and unique Kullu Dussehra festival, which is celebrated till date.
Later, Lord Raghunath was declared as the ruling deity of the Kullu Valley and the government of Himachal Pradesh accorded the status of International festival to the Kullu Dussehra, which attracts tourists in large numbers.
Kullu Dussehra, with its unique customs and tradition, and the participation of local deities from nearby villages, has evolved over the centuries.
