Kerala Tourism has always stood ahead in gathering tourists from around the world, and the result of this is that the Kerala government has launched a new tourism policy of targeting 100% increase in the arrival of foreign tourist, and 50% of domestic tourists in five years.
Sustainable tourism initiatives will form the major part of Kerala tourism domestic campaign this year.
The domestic arrivals to Kerala recorded an increase of 5.67% with 1, 31,72,535 tourist arriving to the state. The total tourism revenue of the state increased 11.12% compared to 2015.

According to the senior Kerala tourism official, Sanjeev, "The new tourism policy is targeting foreign tourists and inviting them to the state. They have a new marketing campaign and have increased their presence at trade and tourism fairs across the world and in various parts of India."

To ensure the accomplishment of an ambitious target, the role of Kerala's tourist police has been increased to look after security, and various new destinations and activities have been identified, especially for foreign tourists.
Sanjeev also stated that "We work in collaboration with the local bodies and other non-governmental organisations (NGO) in Kerala to identify new tourist spots and activities. Like we have done with Bekal in north Kerala, we have also identified places where adventure sports and trekking can be enjoyable, and they are always frequented by foreign tourists. The Kannur airport will open in mid-2018 and will also improve the accessibility of these areas."
Also, the government has plans to restore the heritage sites and to set up museums in Kochi to provide a wholesome experience to its travellers.
