The Godafoss Waterfall is the proverbial feather in Iceland’s gem-studded hat. It is widely known as the Waterfall of the Gods and it sure lives up to that name. It’s possible to spend hours staring at the water gushing off the horse-shoe shaped rocks that make up Godafoss. The source of the falls is water from the glacial river Skjálfandafljót. The river runs across dramatic lava fields, which are 7000 years old, before it reaches the cliffs. Godafoss is popular in Icelandic folklore as the place where heathen gods were drowned before the entire country converted to Christianity. Wrap yourself in warm clothes, as it can get quite cold at the site of the falls, even in summer. There is ample parking and the entrance to Godafoss is free for all.
