Goa beaches to have ‘no-selfie’ zones to curb drowning incidents

Goa administration has marked certain points on its beaches as ‘no selfie’ zones to curb incidents of drowning. The state-appointed lifeguard agency has marked 24 ‘no selfie’ points along the coast. For clarity, the agency has even put up ‘red flags’ on all the beaches, and marked them as ‘no-swim’ zone to prevent cases of drowning. This move comes in the wake of an increasing number of drowning incidents while clicking selfies.

Ravi Shankar, chief executive of Drishti Marine, which is a government appointed private lifeguard agency, said that areas like Baga River, Sinquerim Fort, Ashwem, Dona Paula Jetty, Anjuna, Arambol, Morjim, Vagator, Kerim, and areas between Bambolim and Siridao in North Goa have been identified as spots where taking selfies will be restricted from now.
He further added that the areas restricted from South Goa are Bogmalo, Agonda, Japanese Garden, Canaguinim, Baina, Betul, Cabo De Rama, Talpona, Polem, Khola, Galgibagh and Rajbagh.
In short, mostly every beach in the North and South Goa has been marked restricted under this special zone. Anybody found deviating from the rule, will be attracting strict actions.

The official also added that the lifeguards will be closely monitoring the weather conditions and will be on duty throughout the monsoon period from 7:30 AM to 6 PM every day. He also said, “In addition to that, two Drishti lifeguards are available at every lifeguard tower to handle any emergency which may crop up until 8 PM. Post sunset from 6 PM to 12 midnight, the beaches are monitored and patrolled by the Beach Safety Patrol (BSP).”
