Ghrishneshwar Jyotirling Temple

One of the holiest sites for the Hindus, Ghrishneshwar Jyotirling Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. As per Shiva Purana, it is the last of the twelve naturally occurring Shiva Lingas or Jyotirlings across India. In the 16th century, Maloji Raje Bhosle, grandfather of Shivaji, the founder of Maratha Confederacy, undertook restoration work. While in the 18th century, Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar is credited with similar efforts. The mythological story of this Jyotirling is interesting. It is said that once a Shiva devotee's son was killed by her sister, who was also her husband's other wife. Instead of showing signs of anger or rage, the devotee continued to pray and seek emancipation for her sister. Impressed by her righteousness, Lord Shiva is said to have offered her a boon and brought her son back to life. During that meeting, she is also said to have requested a permanent presence of His holy powers to safeguard the people from negative thoughts and feelings. Hence, the manifestation of Lord Shiva in this Jyotirling.

The Jyotirling is opposite Maloji Raje Bhosle Gadi and barely a kilometre from Ellora Caves. Expect more than usual number of people on Mondays when hundreds of people come to offer prayers.
