Geysir in South Iceland is the most famous spring or geyser (the word is derived from this Icelandic spring) on this volcanic island. Iceland sits atop a huge 'plume' of magma stretching hundreds of kilometres below it, towards the earth's core, in the Mid-Atlantic Ridge rift zone. It ejects a water column to a height of about 180 ft. This 'plume' makes Iceland richer in hot springs and geothermal activity than any other country on earth. Over 200 geothermal areas produce 800+ hot springs with an average water temperature of around 75°C or 167°F.
