About 71% of the Sri Lankan population is Buddhists. And you will spot statues of the Buddha, and thangkas almost everywhere in the country. There are also several Buddhist temples dotting Colombo; one of the most famous ones is the Gangaramaya Temple. Walk in and you can feel the serenity in the air as prayer wheels, flags and idols decorate the place, while monks in their maroon robes conduct religious rites. Even for those who aren't religious, the beauty of the temple complex will win them over. Within the temple, there is also a library with books on Buddhism, and a museum that will offer you a glimpse into the religion. Try and time your visit to Gangaramaya such that you can witness the Vesak celebrations, also referred to as Buddha Purnima.
