In Idukki district, is located the beautiful place called Vagamon. It is a hill station situated 1,200 m above the sea level, about 106 km from Kochi, 32 km from Parunthumpara, and 99 km from Munnar.
Vagamon not only embalms a typical nature-lover’s soul, but also has enough “things to do” for an adventure buff. With its trekking, paragliding, and rock climbing activities, Vagamon packs a punch for the thrill-seeking tourists.
Some of the worth-visiting sites in Vagamon can be noted as under:
Kurishumala
One of the best vantage points of Vagamon is Kurishmala. But getting here could be a real test of grit for many, given the difficulty level of the trek. It usually takes 30 minutes to reach the hilltop where the visitor is rewarded with breathtaking views of Vagamon and Kochi depending upon the climate and visibility. A renowned church is also located atop the hill, which is a Christian pilgrimage site.
Murugan Mala
A small hill known as Murugan Mala lies 8 km from Vagamon and to the east of Kurisumala. Devout locals and tourists visit the temple of Murugan Swami aka Kartikeya, the son of Lord Shiva, that is located atop the hill. One of the unique features of this temple is its single-rock construction.
Thangal Hill
This is know as a significant site located close to Vagamon that enshrines the remains of the 12th century Sufi Saint, Sheikh Fariduddin aka Bābā Farīd. Lovely grasslands, meadows, and lush pine forests envelop the attractive Thangal Hill.
Tip: Travellers can rent a jeep and driver for INR 1,800 approx to explore Vagamon for an entire day.
