Uttarakhand’s Champawat district needs to be on your travel wishlist, here’s why

This year, we are all about travelling to offbeat destinations and exploring the least explored. It’s true that most of the hill stations in India are slowly falling prey to overpopulation. So it’s time we spread out! For the month of March, we have Champawat, Uttarakhand, in mind.

Champawat district is the second least populated district in the state of Uttarakhand (first is Rudraprayag), and is a part of Uttarakhand’s Kumaon area. Champawat is surrounded by Pithoragarh, Udham Singh Nagar, Nainital and Almora districts. You must have already guessed how the weather would be in Champawat – comfortably cool. The maximum temperature during summer is 30 degrees.


Recently, the district restarted boat rides along with other water adventure activities in Shyamlatal, after 13 long years. Shyamlatal is located in the Sharda Valley, and is one of the least explored places in Uttarakhand. All the more reason to go and explore but do so before the monsoon strikes.



The best time to visit Champawat is from March to June; these are also the driest months. It’s better to avoid the region during monsoon season because of the unpredictable weather conditions leading to a number of situations like landslides and cloudbursts. There’s nothing to worry about during the summer months, and a little sun and mountain air never hurt anyone anyway.


Lohaghat in Champawat is another interesting place to visit. Lohaghat town, on the banks of the River Lohawati, is a picturesque destination. Lohaghat’s greenery and the pristine air will leave you speechless. It is one of the very few places in Uttarakhand that still has natural beauty and is practically untouched.
