Till this day and age, the craftsmen are called kanchhkar. The fact that the skill of glass making is passed down generations is why we feel good about getting our hands on a piece of art that is authentic. The kanchhkars are highly skilled in creating items like bangles, lamps, chandeliers, vases, bowls, candle holders, figurines, and decorative items. These glass items are popular for their intricate designs, vibrant colours, and exquisite craftsmanship.
A part of this centuries-old trade, however, remained outdated, For instance, evils such as child labour and poor working conditions of the craftsmen, these aspects are still around. However, tremendous awareness and efforts are being made to do what’s ethical. Maybe not all old things are gold!
One can try and hope that more sustainable and ethical practices will be put in place, because for these reasons, there is a high chance that this wonderful art of glassmaking may come to an end, sooner than later. And we wouldn’t want that. There is always a place for the beautiful blend of age-old techniques with modern advancements.
