Referring to this, the Commissioner stated that while most governments would be lifting internal border controls by June 15, some will not be ready to do so till the end of this month. She added that therefore, all internal border controls will likely be lifted by the end of June. She mentioned, “We should consider the gradual lifting of restrictions on non-essential travel to the EU from early July.”
This means Europeans will be able to make summer holiday plans that will provide the much-needed boost to the hard-hit tourism industry.
The governments, however, did not specify which nationals from non-Schengen and non-EU countries would be allowed in first. But they were clear that external travellers will not face internal border controls and that they would be able to travel once again throughout the Schengen area.
Worldwide, more than 6 million people have been confirmed infected by the COVID-19. However, experts opine that the tally understates the true toll of the pandemic because of limited testing, deliberate government undercounts, and missed mild cases.
