There is a sense of eeriness that you encounter the moment you walk in here. A fusion of melancholic yellow, green, blue and beige greets me at this striking crater lake, located near Bandung, the capital of West Java. A wisp of sulphur floats in the air and dead branches of short stunted trees surround the lake. There is absolute silence, even the birds don’t chirp here. My guide said that the birds do not fly here as they drop down dead. The stark barren world hits me as we walk around. Nothing can be heard but the distant strains of music. And there are no tourists or vendors around. While visiting this place, it is recommended to wear a mask for protection against sulphur in the air.
