It will further add to the old vintage charm of the city like other transportation options, such as tram, Ambassador car, yellow and black cabs, and hand-pulled rickshaws.
These buses were first introduced in Kolkata in 1926, which plied from Shyambazar in North Kolkata to Kalighat Mandir in South Kolkata. However, during the 1990s, both production and operation of the buses stopped. At present, just one bus runs in the city, in Eco Park area.
An official in the know-how said that the buses will be enhanced with destination boards, seat belts, CCTV cameras, automatic doors, and fire extinguishers. Reportedly, five buses will have covered decks, whereas the rest will have open-top decks.
While the open-top buses will be utilised for tourism, the closed-roof buses will be used for commuting. And it is expected that the vehicle will start plying on the roads during the second half of this year.
