South Canara is a beautiful coastal district in the southern state of Karnataka. Flanked by the beautiful Arabian Sea on the west and the Western Ghats on the east, it comprises the five major talukas of Mangalore, Bantwal, Puttur, Sullia and Belthangady. The district earlier included nearby talukas of Udupi, Kundapur, Karkala and Byndoor, which are now part of Udupi district (since August 1997). Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Kasargod are often referred to as Tulu Nadu as Tulu is one of the main languages spoken in this region. The region is home to a number of famous temples, and many of these have unique legends, beliefs and mythological stories associated with them and hence have high religious significance. The best time to visit the region is between October and March as the summer months can get uncomfortable due to high temperature, and similarly the monsoon season, because of heavy rain.
