India is a historic country with many historical wonders. And one such wonder here is the mystical stepwells! These ancient structures were constructed as a source of water in the region. These stepwells are functional and architecturally beautiful.
A look at some of the most beautiful stepwells in India:
Rani ki Vav, Gujarat
Rani ki Vav in Patan, Gujarat, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This 11th century stepwell was constructed by Queen Udayamati as a memorial to her husband, King Bhimdev I. The stepwell features sculptures of deities, celestial beings, and intricate carvings.
Chand Baori, Rajasthan
Chand Baori is located in Abhaneri, which is about 2 hours drive from Jaipur. It is among the most famous and gorgeous stepwells in India built during the 9th century. It has 3500 narrow steps arranged in perfect symmetry, leading 13 stories down to the water level. It’s a sight to behold!
Adalaj Stepwell, Gujarat
Located just outside Ahmedabad, the Adalaj Stepwell is a beautiful structure with religious and mythological carvings. It was built in 1499 by Queen Rudabai.
Rudabai Stepwell, Adalaj, Gujarat
Often overshadowed by the nearby Adalaj Stepwell, the Rudabai Stepwell is another gem in Gujarat. It is known for its octagonal well shaft and beautifully carved galleries.
Stepwell of Rani Padmini, Chittorgarh, Rajasthan
This incredible stepwell is related with the legendary queen Padmini of Mewar. While it's not as grand as some others, it has a unique charm.
Toorji Ka Jhalra, Jodhpur, Rajasthan
Toorji Ka Jhalra is a restored stepwell in the heart of Jodhpur. It underwent extensive renovations to bring it back to its former glory.
Neemrana Baoli, Rajasthan
Neemrana Baoli is another ancient stepwell near the Neemrana Fort in Rajasthan. This stepwell is known for its unique construction, with two sets of staircases that crisscross but never meet.
Agrasen ki Baoli, Delhi
Agrasen ki Baoli, though set in the heart of New Delhi, is one of the most overlooked attractions in Delhi. It is a well-preserved stepwell believed to have been built by the legendary king Agrasen during the Mahabharata era.
