Weirdest reasons why people got detained at airports

Believe it or not, airport security can, more often than not, become a stage where the most unexpected dramas unfold. From being detained for carrying a suspiciously large quantity of shampoo to inadvertently setting off alarms with an innocent joke, travellers find themselves starring in their own absurd tales. Whether it's mistaken identity with a passport photo or travellers who got carried away with, let’s just say…unusual souvenirs, the airport becomes a theatre of the bizarre.

Disguise gone wrong: In 2019, a 32-year-old Ahmedabad resident was detained at Indira Gandhi International Airport. He was trying to reach New York City as an elderly individual in a wheelchair… and a forged passport. As per reports, his gig was up the moment security personnel realised something was off about his appearance. Talk about a disguise that’s poorly crafted. While his passport said 81 years old, his youthful skin said otherwise.


Not even Arnold Schwarzenegger was spared: Actor and former politician Arnold Schwarzenegger experienced a nearly three-hour delay at Munich airport for allegedly failing to declare an Audemars Piguet watch valued at over EUR 10,000 (INR 8,98,228). Despite the setback, the actor and former politician remained composed, even posing for a photo in the tax bureau office. It later emerged that Schwarzenegger intended to auction the watch to benefit a climate charity.

Attempted baby smuggling: A 43-year-old American woman from Ohio, was arrested in the Philippines for allegedly attempting to smuggle a baby out of the country in her carry-on luggage. The individual managed to pass through airport immigration without declaring the infant, but guards later discovered the baby boy. Claiming to be the child's aunt, Talbot lacked evidence to support her statement and was detained and charged with human trafficking.

Snakes onboard…well, almost: In 2011 at Miami International Airport, a man was caught attempting to smuggle seven snakes and several small turtles through a very unusual method. Each snake was individually wrapped in hosiery and concealed in the man's pants. The illicit wildlife was intercepted by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, resulting in the passenger's arrest.

Ma’am, that’s a dead body: In 2010, at an airport in Liverpool, two women attempted to board a flight to Berlin with their 91-year-old relative, who was, unbeknownst to them, deceased. The man, accompanied by his wife and stepdaughter, was noticed by airport staff to be unresponsive while sitting in a wheelchair wearing sunglasses. When questioned, the wife claimed she believed he was merely asleep and didn't realise he had passed away.
