Croatia’s Sea Organ is nature’s own musical

The Sea Organ is an unique architectural and musical installation that will change your view towards waterfront attractions. The city of Zadar has certainly raised the bar quite high there.

The Sea Organ was designed by Croatian architect, Nikola Bašić. The installation was a part of the larger waterfront renovation project.


Those who are unaware may not even notice the installation because visually, it can be mistaken for a random platform. The Sea Organ consists of a series of underwater pipes and channels that are integrated into a set of steps descending into the Adriatic Sea.



When the waves move in and out of the pipes, a symphony is created. And everytime it makes a different sound. The sound that gets generated by the water and the pipes resembles that of an organ (the musical instrument), hence the name.



As no waves or tide is the same, the same goes for the music that’s produced by the Sea Organ.


For those visiting the Sea Organ, it is easy to get lost in the world of somewhat unsynchronised harmony. The term ‘perfectly imperfect’ comes to mind when we listen to the Sea Organ. This unique song of the sea can be quite relaxing as it has a meditative vibe to it.


Can it be called an architectural marvel? Most definitely. The symphony is created by 35 polyethylene pipes of different lengths and sizes. These are built into the stairs that are stretched 70 m along the coast. The waves and the air produce a mix of sounds that range from whistles to taps and long notes. When the sea is busy making music, visitors can just sit on the steps and meditate with the sound.

No wonder, the Sea Organ is an iconic tourist attraction and a landmark in Zadar. Since there is no OFF button for this, one can’t help but wonder, does this ever get too noisy? Yes, and No. It depends on who you are asking. Some don’t find the sound annoying, and some do. Some have compared the sound to that of Japanese horror movies, and some take out time to go visit this musical installation.
