One of the most iconic and important landmarks in Mumbai is the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, located in Fort Mumbai, Maharashtra. Earlier it was known as Victoria Terminus, named after Queen Victoria. The UNESCO World Heritage Site

The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004.

The history

The construction of the historic railway terminus finished in 1887. It was built to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria, 50 years of the Queen’s rule.

The architecture

The railway terminus was designed by the British-born architectural engineer Frederick William Stevens. The initial design was, however, Axel Herman Haig’s, a Swedish artist and architect. The iconic building showcases the Italian Gothic style of architecture.

The name

The railway terminus was earlier called Victoria Terminus. Later, in 1996, it was renamed after emperor Chhatrapati Shivaji, soon after the erstwhile Bombay was renamed as Mumbai.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus is the headquarters of India’s Central Railway, and easily one of the busiest and biggest railway stations in India.

The railway station

There are in total, 18 platforms. Several suburban trains and long distance trains like Rajdhani, Duronto, Garib Rath and Tejas Express go from this railway station.
