Chattar Manzil (Umbrella Palace)

Situated on the banks of the Gomti River, the Chattar Manzil or Umbrella Palace was built by Nawab Ghazi-dd-din Haider but was completed only after his death by his son, Nawab Nasir-dd-din Haider. One of the most imposing buildings in Lucknow, this palace is a fine example of the hydrid Indo-European-Nawabi architectural style. The most noticeable feature of this palace is the umbrella-shaped domes or chattris from which it derives its name. The Umbrella Palace was an important centre for the Indian rebels during the 1857 rebellion. It still retains its old world charm and now houses the office of the Central Drug Research Institute (CDRI).
