Into stranger tides – the claim to fame of this stunning cosmopolitan city is its tidal phenomenon, which is unique to Chalkida. Here, the water is known to change its direction due to the moon’s pull, every six hours. During every change, the water stands still for about seven to eight minutes. You can witness this natural sorcery if you travel 78.6 km away from Athens, which should roughly take about 1 hour by road. Here at Chalkida you must visit the Red House, which is the landmark of the city; the Karababas fortress, which is a Venetian fort standing atop the Kanithos Hill; and the beautiful Evoikos Gulf. Also visit the Archaeological Museum, the Folk Art Museum, and the Municipal Art Gallery. During summers, visitors can seek the thrill of water sports, so plan accordingly.
