Castlerigg Stone Circle

Located near Keswick, the stone circle at Castlerigg is one of Britain's oldest stone circles dating back to the Neolithic period, approximately 4000 to 5000 years ago. Standing on an elevated natural plateau and amidst the most picturesque surroundings, the circle consists of about 38 stones some as tall as 10 feet. The construction has astronomical and geometric alignments making the same extremely significant. The purpose of this construction is not known but in all probability it could have been used as a trading or religious centre. Owned by the National Trust and maintained by English Heritage, this is yet another tourist hotspot which is extremely popular due to its panoramic views and the beautiful mountains of Helvellyn and High Seat as a backdrop.
