Genoa is famed as the port city where Christopher Columbus was born in 1451. Columbus’ tiny house has been preserved, and for a small entry fee, it’s possible to enter the confines and explore the medieval house in its entirety. Inside, there is a small selection of objects relevant to Columbus’ life. The artefacts tell the story of his life—his birth in Italy, his job in Portugal, and his journeys around the world. The size of the house prevents the display from being overwhelming. It’s possible to explore the house in less than an hour. Its ivy-laden walls lend an air of mystery to the building and the accompanying garden and cloisters make for good photos. While the small structure isn’t the most impressive, its setting in the historic Italian city will make you wonder why Columbus ever left!
