No roads cross or lead into this truly vast area of wilderness. Its tundra and arctic forests are the protected homes of polar bears, caribou, moose, lynx, wolves, muskox, wolverines, black bears, marten and grizzly bears (to name only a few of its inhabitants). The refuge covers the coast and islands just off it as well, protecting the salt marshes and lagoons and their populations of seabirds and snow geese. Bigger wildlife migrate towards the coast in summer to cool off in seas floating with ice bergs and polar bears, and seals hunt and breed here during the winter so it’s an integral part of the plan to protect these creatures. Get in on foot, by aircraft (there are settlements within the refuge,) or by boat. Read less
