Beyond Angkor Wat, Cambodia’s hidden gems to explore
When one thinks of Cambodia, the majestic Angkor Wat immediately comes to mind, which has recently bagged the title of world’s eighth wonder. There is no doubt that this iconic temple complex is an engineering marvel, and a UNESCO World Heritage site that lures millions of visitors each year.
However, there is also no denying the fact that Cambodia has much more to offer beyond Angkor Wat. Here, we venture into the off-the-beaten path, and explore the hidden gems of the country that definitely deserves a mention.
Battambang
Set in the northwest of Cambodia, Battambang is a lush countryside that boasts of a thriving arts scene. When here, don’t miss the Bamboo Train, a unique rail journey on a makeshift bamboo platform that promises an unforgettable experience. Explore contemporary Cambodian arts, and discover the exquisite Wat Banan temple, which is often referred to as the Mini Angkor Wat.
Koh Rong Archipelago
This place is for all those seeking sun, sea, and sand. This place offers an idyllic escape, and boasts of pristine beaches, vibrant coral reefs, and clear turquoise waters. The smaller Koh Rong Samloem offers a more relaxed atmosphere. Dive into the underwater wonders, enjoy the bioluminescent plankton at night, or simply unwind on the unspoilt beaches for a perfect island retreat.
Kampot
Nestled along the banks of the Teuk Chhou River, Kampot will offer you a laid back charm, which contrasts with the bustling energy of other nearby areas. This riverside town is famed for its pepper plantations, and a visit to the pepper farms will provide you the necessary insights into the cultivation of one of Cambodia's most sought-after exports. Cruise down the river, explore the French colonial architecture, and savor the local seafood while taking in the scenic views.
Mondulkiri
If you are inclined to take a detour, escape to the northeastern highlands of Cambodia to discover the natural beauty of Mondulkiri Province. Best known for its lush landscapes, waterfalls, and minority hill tribes, Mondulkiri offers a refreshing break from the more touristy destinations. The stunning Bou Sra Waterfall and the Mondulkiri Project, an elephant sanctuary promoting responsible tourism, are the highlights of this place.
Kratié
Situated along the banks of the Mekong River, it’s a riverside town that lets you take a glimpse into Cambodia's rural life. The rare Irrawaddy dolphins inhabit the nearby waters, and a boat trip along the river offers you a chance to spot these elusive creatures. Don’t miss the stunning sunset over the Mekong, and immerse yourself in the laid-back ambiance of this charming town.
Preah Vihear Temple
Perched atop the Dângrêk Mountains on the Thai-Cambodian border, Preah Vihear Temple is a UNESCO-listed site with a rich history and breathtaking views. While Angkor Wat is renowned for its grandeur, Preah Vihear's location provides a unique vantage point, offering panoramic views of the Cambodian plains. The temple's intricate carvings and historical significance make it a must-visit for history enthusiasts.
Banlung
The northeastern province of Ratanakiri, and its capital, Banlung offers a glimpse into Cambodia's indigenous cultures and untamed landscapes. Visit the Yeak Laom Volcanic Lake, trek through dense jungles to discover hidden waterfalls, and engage with the indigenous communities to learn more about their unique customs and traditions.
Bokor Hill Station
Bokor Hill Station is a historical site with a fascinating past. Once a retreat for the French colonial elite, the area is now dotted with abandoned buildings and a haunted, yet captivating, atmosphere. Explore the eerie Le Bokor Palace Hotel, the old church, and revel in the stunning views of the Cambodian coastline from the mountaintop.
