Although it’s a bit of a trek (20 km) from the heart of Kodaikanal, Berijam lake warrants a visit for its spectacular surroundings and untouched beauty. While its more popular counterpart—the Kodaikanal Lake—is thronged by tourists, this is where you need to go if you prefer places that aren’t crowded and commercial. You will require prior permission from the forest department since entry is restricted, but it’s well worth the effort. Occupying an area which was once a swamp, the lake is surrounded by pine trees, and is the chief source of water for the neighbouring Periyakulam Town. If you’re lucky, you could even spot the leopard, although sightings of the bison are more common.
