Beijing at a glance

Enormous and sprawling, Beijing reflects China’s long imperial history and its rapid economic progress. The Tiananmen Square and its surrounding areas are the city’s political and historical heart. They include the Forbidden City or the Chinese Imperial Palace, the Jingshan Park and the commercial avenue itself. More recent, the stretch between Gongti and Sanlitun constitutes the elegant embassy area with leafy avenues, stylish bars, clubs and designer shops. The upscale business district Guomao houses the international trade centre, shiny skyscrapers and some truly cutting-edge architecture. The Lama Temple is an ancient religious site offers insights into Tibetan Buddhism, and also encloses cute cafes, boutiques and restaurants. The hutong neighbourhood around Galou is one of the few places where you can still get a glimpse of old Beijing, with rooftop bars, cafes, restaurants and boutiques.
