Piazza delle Erbe

This place is the heart of Verona, and is one that is vibrant and buzzing, and is surrounded with historical monuments. The northern side of this square has the ancient Town hall – Torre dei Lamberti, Judges hall – Casa dei Giudici, and frescoed Mazzanti Houses. The western side has the Baroque Palazzo Maffei, and faces a white marble column which has the St. Mark's Lion – said to be the symbol of the Republic of Venice. The South of this place has the House of Merchants – Casa dei Mercanti, and tall houses reminiscent of medieval tower houses. The most ancient monument in this square has a fountain built way back in 1368, surmounted by a statue of Madonna Verona, a Roman sculpture that dates back to 380 AD. The best part is that the streets are lined up with several al fresco restaurants here; also, there are several market stalls for visitors to pick souvenirs from. Off the piazza is the Arco della Costa, or the monumental arch on which a whale’s rib is hung. One of the most historical and picturesque city squares that is filled with street vendors, restaurants, and shopping places, you can easily spend many hours browsing and soaking into the sights, sounds and smells here.
