The Galata Tower

Located just north of the Golden Horn, the Galata Tower is a striking landmark in Istanbul. The medieval stone tower was constructed in 1348 by the Romans and was originally named the Tower of Christ. It was the tallest building in Istanbul and provided clear view of the water channel. Later Ottomans used the tower for spotting fires in the city. The Galata Tower has been a constant feature of Istanbul cityscape since 14th century and still dominates the skyline north of the Golden Horn. The top of this 66.90 m tall tower can be accessed by an elevator. The balcony at the top provides 360 degree view of Istanbul. Be warned that during the peak season it gets extremely crowded on the top. If you are in a mood of an exclusive evening and splurging, book a table at the restaurant on the top. The windows provide magnificent views of Istanbul. The spectacular panorama of the Bosphorus strait is worth everything!
