Visit an intricately carved Shiva Temple – located 30 km Northeast of Siem Reap, the Hindu temple of Banteay Srei is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The most intricately carved temple in Angkor Complex, the temple of Banteay Srei is a ‘Jewel of Khmer Art.’ Built in 10th century, it is one of the oldest temples in the archaeological complex. The lavishly decorated interiors of Banteay Srei boast elaborate carvings of women with lotus flowers and scenes from Ramayana. One theory suggests these carvings were created by women as men’s hands cannot produce such fine work. The mythical guardians watch over the central towers and the libraries. The temple can be covered after finishing a visit at Bayon Temple. Plan a trip during the later part of the day, when the temple comes alive. During the evening the red sandstone structure radiates pinkish hue under the slanting sun. Walk around the temple, and you will be awe-struck by the intricacy of the carvings. The beauty of Banteay Srei is that this miniature masterpiece is loaded with exquisite decorations.
