No trip to Beijing is complete without putting your foot on the biggest ancient structure ever built. The wall is believed to be running for around 6400 kilometres. Badaling section of the wall is closest to Beijing and can be reached by road in 45 minutes. The beautifully restored wall and towers will definitely leave you in awe. The construction of this glorious structure began in the 2nd century BC and the fortification process intensified in the 13th century during the rule of the Ming Dynasty. Being in the vicinity of the city, Badaling is also the most crowded section of the wall, trampled by millions of tourists every year. If you wish to trek in peace, then head to Jinshanling or Simatai. Now this is not for faint hearted; only serious trekkers can try Simatai as it needs stamina and courage. The relentless ascents and constant descents of the wall on the mountain ridge are known to test the endurance levels of even the fittest. But it is a once in a lifetime experience and can be very fulfilling. One can climb the wall without any guide or help, or take the assistance of a local tour organiser if required.
