Aurobindo Ashram is the main spiritual hub of Pondicherry, attracting lakhs of visitors around the year. It came into being after Sri Aurobindo, a philosopher, yogi and poet, attained enlightenment and retired from public life with a group of his followers. It houses two shrines that have the remains of Sri Aurobindo and his spiritual partner, Mirra Alfassa, also referred to as the Mother. You can join one of the daily tours of the ashram organised by the ashram members to know more about the life and work of Sri Aurobindo. Visitors can also participate in group meditation sessions (all days except Thursday, Saturday and Sunday). The ashram also has a number of rooms for visitors, these need to be booked beforehand.
