Pulau Bidong, one of the least known islands in Terengganu, is being transformed by the state government into Asia’s first underwater gallery, a place which will have in display 13 sculptures that are replicas of cultural artefacts and relics found in Terengganu, including a turtle, a tengkolok, a pearl and the Terengganu Inscription Stone.
Wondering what all of these things mean? Well, Pulau Bidong has years of history backing its existence. This place was once home to 40,000 Vietnamese, who escaped their country between 1978 and 1990 in order to stay safe from the communists back then. After being a temporary refugee camp for years, Pulau Bidong was handed back to the Terengganu state government in 1991.
A destination otherwise frequented only by a handful of young travellers, who visit it for scuba diving, Pulau Bidong is gearing up to be the next upcoming destination of Malaysia.
