If Fontainhas and Sao Tome are the Christian areas, Mala, next to it, is pre-Portuguese Hindu. So, while on that walking tour, keep that stride going past 31st January Road and enter another heritage on Nanu Tarkar Pednekar Road. This entire stretch of Mala-Fontainhas precinct is declared as a conservation zone. A cursory look at the houses might misguide an onlooker because of the standard roof tiled designs of the houses across the state but when you observe closely, you will notice how the differences in colours and architectural styles in the two localities coexist. Also notice how Hindu houses invariably sport an angan (courtyard).
You could hear the pealing of temple bells from a distance. Locals say the bells start to peal early morning and on some days keep going relentlessly throughout the day. As the road turns towards Altinho Hill, you would notice bright saffron flags fluttering in the blue sky. Gradually, the beautiful orange and white building of Maruti Temple, located at a height, emerges. It takes a flight of stairs to enter the temple premises and from up there you get to enjoy an unrestricted view of the surroundings. Maruti Temple allows non-Hindus and foreigners as visitors. So, if you are in Panaji with a diverse gang of friends, go right ahead.
