Wayanad tourism spots to turn plastic-free soon

In a definite step towards sustainable travel, all the touristy places in Wayanad will be turning plastic-free in the near future. Wayanad District Collector AR Ajayakumar convened a meeting of a task force, Haritha Keralam Mission, to address the issue of plastic use and declare all tourist spots in the district plastic-free.
After the meeting, the Collector said that the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) will be directed to ban the use of plastic at all tourist spots in the district. A three-day vehicle rally will also be organised from January 13 to 16 with the title ‘Haritha Yanam’ to spread the word on this issue.

It was also decided in the meeting that two district-level workshops will also be organised on January 21 and 27 in an effort to restore 16 rivulets in the district. Thereafter, another workshop will be organised in the first week of February titled, ‘Jala Sangamam’.
If tourism prospects are analysed with respect to Wayanad, it features on top of the list when Kerala hill stations are considered. Not just the lush greenery of Western Ghats, but region’s scenic roads, dense jungle, coffee plantations and tea estates also make this place one of Kerala’s best-kept secrets. And Wayanad, being a part of Kerala, boasts of ecology that is unlike many other places. It has till date managed to retain its charm.
With this latest development, it is expected that this move will definitely work in favour of Wayanad’s ecology and pave a path for responsible tourism.
