Kota’s regal charm lies in the magnificent palace which was the brainchild of the Bundi clan in order to expand the reigns of their empire at the site where the chief of the Bhil tribe was beheaded by Prince Jai Singh of Bundi in the 13th century. The palace museum opened its doors to the public officially in 1970 while the rest of the palace remains in the service of Maharao Brijraj Singh of Kotah and his family. The Museum has antique and treasure-worthy articles such as arms and armour, ritual objects, textiles and objets d’art, and world–famous miniature paintings and wall frescos. The palace houses Gulab Mahal, Purana Mahal, Arjun Mahal, Hava Mahal, Diwan-e-Aam, Akhada Mahal, Kanvarpadi. The common feature among all these royal apartments are the wall paintings depicting floral and faunal diversity, hunting scenes, processions and scenes from the legend of Lord Krishna, one of the tutelary deities of Kota.
