Word to the wise: As Al Bateen is made up primarily of locals, the area tends to be more conservative. Dress modestly, even when on the beach.

Compared to the buzzing areas that surround the Corniche, Al Bateen is notably quieter. This neighbourhood isn’t plagued with traffic jams, nightclubs are few and far between and the closest mall is more an overgrown supermarket. What makes the neighbourhood attractive is its local flavour. Though Emiratis make up a minority of the city’s demographic, most choose to live in Al Bateen. Sprawling villas, charming townhouses and private gardens dot the avenues, and offer visitors a glimpse into a more traditional way of life.
Though currently undergoing a facelift, the Al Bateen Marina still offers stellar views of the Gulf, and makes for a nice—if quiet—spot for a meal out. The nearby Al Bateen Beach is also one of the less crowded stretches of coast in the city.
