An Alpine ski resort readies to reopen after lockdown with a new vision

Ischgel, the famous Alpine ski resort of Austria has reopened after a period of lockdown. However, the beautiful ski resort that was at the centre of Austria’s COVID-19 cases, will no more be known as a party destination. Ischgl, which is known as the Ibiza of the Alps, is the place where more than 800 of Austrian Coronavirus cases can be traced.
The ski resort went under lockdown on March 13. Ischgl is a winter paradise, full of tourists who are eager to party in the Alps, and this has caused it to become one of the hotbeds of the virus. Hundreds of visitors brought back the virus to their cities and towns, thereby spreading the virus further. In fact, Iceland had declared the ski resort as a risk area once tourists began to return home with the virus.


Now, Ischgl’s mayor, Werner Kurz, has said in a statement that the ski resort will question past developments, and make necessary corrections for the future. The mayor also felt that the image of this beautiful ski resort as a party destination is not justified as it is only a small part of what this Austrian paradise has to offer.
Now, authorities are looking to ease the lockdown in the ski resort, and reopen with new agendas. This means that priority will be given to skiers and fewer party tourists. Austria has had 15402 cases of Coronavirus, with 580 deaths. The country is looking to lift the lockdown in steps, May 1 onwards.
